Building Community in Online Classes: A Guide for High Schoolers

Despite the benefits of online classes, many students find that the absence of in-person interactions can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection. The juxtaposition from online courses to a student's typical day of in person school, sports and clubs and socializing with friends can feel drastic. But please know, you're not alone in this challenge. Building a strong online community is key to success and feeling connected. Let's explore practical ways you can create meaningful connections in the digital world.

Making Connections: It's Easier Than You Think

Creating connections in an online environment might seem daunting at first, but there are many ways to engage with your classmates and teachers. Here are some strategies to help you build bridges in the digital classroom:

  • Dive into Discussions: Many online classes require students to post and reply to discussion comments as part of the coursework. This is a great opportunity to engage with your peers and share your thoughts. When crafting your posts, try phrases like "I agree, and here's why..." or "That's an interesting point, what about..." to spark meaningful conversations. Remember, don't just stick to the minimum required posts - the more you engage, the more you'll get out of the class and the stronger connections you'll build.

  • Reach Out to Your Teacher: While virtual office hours can be a great way to connect with your teacher, they might not always occur at a convenient time or might feel a bit intimidating. Don't worry! Sending a thoughtful email to your teacher can be just as effective. Share your thoughts on the course material or ask for clarification on assignments. This shows initiative and helps build a positive relationship with your instructor.

  • Create a Virtual Study Squad: Miss studying with friends? Create a virtual study group! Use video chat to review notes, quiz each other, and tackle tough assignments together. This can be a great way to stay motivated and learn from each other.

  • The Online Coffee Shop: Talk to your teacher about creating a "Coffee Shop" forum on your online class platform for casual interactions. This can be a space to talk about anything from school to hobbies or current events, helping you get to know your classmates beyond just the course material.

Banish Isolation, Boost Motivation, Build Community

Feeling disconnected in an online learning environment is common, but there are ways to combat this and stay motivated. Here are some strategies to help you stay engaged and connected:

  • Goal Getters: Set realistic goals for each week. Break big assignments into smaller tasks. Use a planner to stay on track, and reward yourself for hitting those goals. This can be as simple as treating yourself to a favorite snack or activity.

  • Find Your Accountability Partner: While study groups are great for collaborative learning, having an accountability partner can provide more personalized support. Connect with a classmate who shares your work ethic and goals. Check in with each other regularly, share your progress, and offer encouragement. This one-on-one connection can help you stay on track and motivated throughout the course.

  • Self-Care is Key: Step away from the screen! Take breaks to listen to music, exercise, hang out with friends, or just chill. Prioritize sleep and healthy snacks. Taking care of yourself is crucial for maintaining energy and focus.

  • Parents, We Need You! Creating a supportive learning environment at home is crucial for online learning success. Check out this earlier blog for tips on creating a dedicated study space, encouraging participation, and supporting your child's online learning journey.

  • Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help: If you're struggling, reach out to your teachers, counselors, or a trusted adult. They are there to help you succeed.

Building community in online classes takes effort, but it's worth it. Take the initiative to connect with classmates and teachers, and create a supportive online environment. Remember, you're not alone in this journey. By creating meaningful connections, you'll not only succeed academically but also build valuable relationships that extend beyond the classroom. AVLI is committed to providing a supportive and engaging online learning environment for our students. We encourage you to take advantage of these strategies and build a strong community in your online classes.
